Personal Branding
Challenge
When you are your best product
When your name is your brand, the work has to feel like you. An artist, author, performer, or entrepreneur needs more than a polished image: people should get a sense of who you are, what you do, and why they should pay attention.
Strategy
Make the person as compelling as the work.
Personal branding calls for a careful balance. The presentation has to be distinctive enough to get noticed and authentic enough to earn trust. Whether someone is stepping onto a stage, launching a book, or building a business, the challenge is to find the qualities that set them apart and bring those qualities forward.
We start with a Brand Focus Review—an in-depth discovery process that answers three key questions:
What are you creating?
Who are you creating it for?
And why should they care?
For internationally acclaimed violinist and educator Daisy Jopling, the Brand Focus Review helped us clarify the relationship between the artist, the educator, and the organization—and create a clearer foundation for reaching the audiences that matter
The distinctive Chelsea Brewing Company Logo harkens back to the great breweries of the 1920’s and 30’s.
The brewery was also a brewpub, and patrons could see the brewing process and equipment. Nothing beats knowing where your beer comes from.
Execution
A different voice for every personality.
The work took its cue from each person’s strengths: the energy of Daisy Jopling’s performances, the stories within Vinnie Bagwell’s sculpture, and the suspense of Sandra Barone’s fiction. For Norma Shapland, the focus was on making her healthy lifestyle community feel welcoming and supportive. For Thomas Hutton, it was on drawing readers into the intrigue of An Unlikely Asset. Each approach gives the audience a reason to look closer and a clear path to learn more.
Top: Yonkers sculptor Vinnie Bagwell has forged a reputation by bringing prominent African Americans to life through signature narrative elements in her work. For more info, see the EARG Page .
Right: Sandra Barone in front of her bestseller billboard in Times Square. For more info, see Sandra’s page.
Norma Shapland has built a healthy lifestyle business by being a sales conduit for Pruvit dietary supplements. She also offers clients a private Facebook page, recipes, journaling, and a support group to help them through their weight-loss journey. See firststep2better.com for more information.
Thomas Hutton, in a fictionalized version of his first year of college, becomes entangled in a love affair with a beautiful Russian spy and a counterintelligence operation involving the FBI and the CIA. Along the way, he meets historical figures, Presidents Nixon and Ford, and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. See more information: An Unlikely Asset
Outcome
Packaging that reached beyond the Pub.
Daisy Jopling, Vinnie Bagwell, Sandra Barone, Norma Shapland, and Thomas Hutton each have a different story and a different audience. Their branding gives people a way into that story, from the first impression to a deeper look at their work. The result is a public presence that feels recognizable, credible, and unmistakably their own.
